Carr-Gomm Scotland works very closely together with relatives of the people we support. Relatives are currently members of our board of directors, members of the Company and are involved in our staff recruitment process. I first heard of Carr-Gomm Scotland 8 years ago when they suggested that my son, Michael, could, for the first time, live and be supported in his own home. My family were concerned at the time but it was the best thing that ever happened. Now, when I visit him, Michael gives me my coat when it is time to go. I think that is fantastic. It lets me know he is really settled in, confident in his support workers, and feels at home.Michael’s life has now completely changed and he does things that I thought he would never do like going out for meals, going to the pictures and his sister’s wedding. What I also like is before he goes anywhere the team check it out first to plan his support. I have become more and more involved with Carr-Gomm Scotland. At first it was being part of planning his support and being on interviews. Then I became involved in tenders for new work to give a parents’ point of view. In 2005 I joined the Board of Directors. This was my first experience of anything like this but I soon got into the way of reading the Board papers and thinking about the issues. You’ve got to think “Are we doing what we are supposed to be doing?” - looking after the interests of people who use the services. Getting InvolvedYou can get involved at any stage and we would welcome your input. This can be as simple as using our Suggestions process or you can get more involved. If you would like to discuss getting more involved you can contact one of our Involvement Managers or the service that supports your relative.
