    Our Philosophy and Values

What is our philosophy?

Our philosophy for our support and services is based on our view of what it is to be a human being.  We are all people.  That means that we are individuals and others should see us as individuals.  At the same time what unites us as human beings is greater than what divides us.

In general, that means there are things that we all want - such as, human relationships, somewhere to live, an income, security, the chance to express ourselves and dreams of the future.  We do not want to be described by our weaknesses and needs but by our view of ourselves and what we want to do.

What are our values?

We base our work on certain values:  Choice, Control, Interdependence, Openness & Honesty and Respect.  Operational values are:  Cost Efficiency, Partnerships and User Involvement.  Whilst they are listed here, behind each one lies thinking about what they mean in our work in specific situations, what promotes them and what are the constraints in real life.

How do we integrate our philosophy and values in our work?

Our philosophy and values form the basis of our policies, strategy, design and operation of our services and support work.  This is done by including them in recruitment, induction, training, team meetings, awaydays, support agreements, risk assessments, joint reviews, appraisals and quality assurance.  They form the basis for action in complex support situations.

Person-Centred Approach

Given our philosophy and values, we have adopted a person-centred approach to our work of supporting people and services.  This emphasises people's strengths, what sort of life they want to lead and what they want to achieve.  Support helps people to achieve those ambitions.

  • We support people in a person-centred way.  This means the person we support is the most important person.  We will try to do things in the way that person would like
  • We can change the way we help a person if what they need or want changes
